With excitement building for the 2017 edition of the DAME Awards, we thought it the perfect time to post this reminder of last year’s overall winner, the Cruise FP electric saildrive from German electric propulsion innovator, Torqeedo GmbH.
Speaking on the InnovationLAB, Torqueedo’s CEO, Dr Christoph Ballin, said his company’s DAME Award win provided great recognition for electric boating. He also said it was a good reward for his hard-working team who had created the Cruise FP, a saildrive that matches or exceeds performance characteristics of internal combustion engine equivalents.
Dr. Ballin argues that boating is lagging land transport in terms of adopting electric mobility. He says it is important not just to sell electric propulsion on its ecological virtues but also to provide and emphasise other benefits, such as weight, size, and performance.
How far away are we from much more widespread adoption of electrical propulsion across mainstream boats? What are the factors holding us back?
